Man, those private student loans are the worst. Let's hope that the government does the private to federal swap thing or allows them to be discharged (which I doubt will never happen). I had about 8k that ballooned into 30k. The lender wanted 400 plus a month and I simply couldn't do it. I ended up settling. Did you know that if you default the lender can levy a bank account and wipe all the money out? That's if they sue and get a judgment. The best thing to do is work another job and try and settle or pay double payments to get out from under them. It's really sad how people want to further their lives and end up in a debt like student loans that they simply cannot every really climb out of in today's economy.

I recently finished grad school and I have several small private student loans through Citibank. I almost fell over when they told me what my monthly payment would be, It was almost double what I had estimated! I have yet to actually get a statement from them, but if you could post your spreadsheet I would appreciate it. I want to make sure my monthly payments will actually make a difference to what I owe! -Mallory

Oh, Citibank and all major lenders in this country are criminals. They should be ashamed of themselves and I would love nothing more than to see them all slapped with massive fines for consumer abuse.

John,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I'm so sick of the dishonesty in lending now that I'm finally getting to a point in my life when I'm able to slow down long enough to look at these details. I was able to get a leg up on my auto loan by paying half of my auto loan on the 27th, and the second half on the 13th. I did this since the inception of the loan which will cut off 7 months of the term of my 60 month loan.

I've been paying on my student loan since 2003, so I don't know if taking this double payment approach will benefit my situation. I'll look at it with your spreadsheet, and respond with what I find.

Thank you again,

Marshall

@Peter: My cpu (the P8400) runs really, really cool. From what I can tell, under both Linux and windows, the fan never shuts completely off, but runs on its lowest setting which is not audible unless you put your ear right up to the vent. Even then, its only a whisper.

Even when this computer is under a lot of stress, (BOINC + large compile, or Civ 4 under Windows), the fan only kicks up a few notches, and while audible, is still quieter than my old Compaq was when it was idle. Also, it's much quieter than the dell E6400 I now have at work (which has a T9xxx processor) They did a really good job with the heat management and fan on this system. I'm extremely happy with it. I don't think I've ever heard the fan at full speed.

What I can't do is tell you if this is because I got a low end, cool running processor or not. For example, if you got a new one with a T9XXX or whatever the latest is, then they run hotter and the fan might be on a higher setting for longer periods of time... I just don't know.

Hi there,

T400 seems to be a nice laptop. Thanks for your review!

One point which would be very important for me: is the fan always on under linx/windows? Or does it stop for a longer period and only starts when it gets under load?

Regards,
Peter.

I had no idea that my loan accrued daily interest either, but I suppose that's why the amount of accrued interest increased each day that I checked the Lender's website.

could you post the spreadsheet?
